About IBSM
The Institute of Behavioral Science in Medicine is a research institute at Yonsei University College of Medicine established in 2000. It's organization is based on the cooperative network between the psychiatric departments of Severance Hospital, Yongdong Severance Hospital, Severance Mental Health Hospital and the National Health Insurance Cooperation Ilsan Hospital. The goal of the IBSM is to attain knowledge about patterns of normal human behavior. to understand the etiology and characteristics of pathological behavior and to investigate the relationship between normal behavior and disease.
Investigators of the IBSM explore the biological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects of human behavior in order to extend our current understanding of the human behavior which constitutes the basis of medicine, Investigations on how normal behavior in individuals form and how certain behavior and disorder develops, the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural etiology of pathological behaviors, and the mechanism, characteristics, progress and prognosis of pathological behaviors are pursued in the IBSM. Through understanding the relationship between normal human behavior and pathological states, investigators of the IBSM seek to find ways to improve treatment and the quality of life of patients.
Research areas in the IBSM include the genetics and evolution of behavior, brain and behavior, substance use and behavior, psychodynamic understanding of behavior, and cultural anthropology using diverse study methodologies such as brain imaging,, genetics,, cohort, pharmacology. The IBSM also provides education through academic exchange and collaborative relationship with students, residents, psychiatric social workers, psychiatric nurses, and clinical psychologists. For a complete achievement of research and educational goals, the IBSM encourages exchanges and collaborative works with foreign research institutions and interdisciplinary researches.

- Main Research Areas :
The Section of Self, Affect & Neuroscience launched the GRAPE (Green Program for Recognition And Prevention of Early Psychosis) project based on the Clinic FORYOU at Severance Hospital since 2007. This project has two research directions. One is to investigate the pathogenetic mechanism of schizophrneia and ultra-high risk for psychosis in terms of the anomalous self-experience, impaired emotional information processing, and sociocognitive deficits. Another research direction is to develop the psychosocial intervention program including cognitive therapy based on the above-mentioned pathogenetic mechanism research in individuals with schizophrenia and ultra-high risk.Recently, the section has conducted the research on the biotyping of psychotic disorders using the cognitive biomarkers: a validation study of cross-sectional and longitudinal follow-up in ultra-high risk, first-episode and chronic individuals.
